During these sad times of COVID-19, viral videos and funny pics try to steal a timid laugh on our faces. One of these videos, called “Coffin Dance” or “funeral Dance” has gone viral. In this post we’re going to explain the origins of it.

Back in 2017, a video went viral of pallbearers in Ghana, who give a rather elaborate send offs to their loved ones by dancing with the coffin.

Over three million people watched the original video, which was aired by the BBC, but it didn’t take long for the video to become a meme in its own right. 

Now the meme has been revived thanks to the current pandemic climate. But what just is the funeral dance meme?

Before getting viral, the original video has been dubbed and mixed by many, and is now famous as “coffin dance crew”, in which six men carry a coffin while dancing to a choreographed and unseen routine.

You can watch the original video of them dancing.

In an interview with the BBC, the leader of the pallbearers, Benjamin Aidoo said:

“I decided to add choreography to it so if the client comes to us, we just ask them: ‘Do you want it solemn, or do you want a bit of a display? Or maybe you want some choreography on it?’ They just ask and we do it.”

Now, this video has flooded over many social platforms suck as TikTok, Facebook, Twitter or Telegram, and many users have starting to mix it with amateur videos of people doing dangerous things that may probably lead to their (not shown) death.

Being honest, it is sad but funny at the same time!

On the other side, we know that viral videos often mutate to something viral as well. That’s what happened in these last days…

While videos of people going to get hurt mixed with Ghanas’ pallbearers are becoming popular, another viral mixing, called “Jesus Saves” sees a person dressed like Jesus, dancing mixed with videos of people that have their life saved.

The heat is on! And is has just started!
